INTERVIEW: Instrumental artist Parjam Parsi

Archive

Hi Parjam, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

A: First thanks for having me, I am fine I guess!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Immersion”?

A:  Yes, it came from my first full-length album which I am working on it 24/7, but we(me and my business partner) decide to release this one a bit soon than we expected.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

A: Mostly I make art in any medium about everything cannot do, say, fix in real life or make them base on my personal experiences as a human. any kind of contemporary art become an inspiration. in this case, one of the influential American choreographer/dancers was the inspiration.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

A: Yes

How was the recording and writing process?

A: Honestly, I become very obsessive when I am working in the studio about everything so we have a long recording method but writing is much easier I am personally beginning with improvising on the instrument until I got the right tone and then I write on that structure

What role does Tehran play in your music?

A: “A sense of separation” in my heart is always with me.

How your upbringing does influences your writing?

A: My ears grew up with classical composers and Mr.Miles Davis himself, but yes as an experience I write pieces in maqam music when I was about to start my journey but they remain as just experiences in past which I try to avoid them for now.

How do you blend your classic roots with your much modern sound?

A: Well, it is a long story, i used to make/perform experimental music for years two years ago decide to make something  never have done before and it all starts when I saw one Willem de Kooning pieces in person. then I start writing, as usual( adding textures and … )but in the end, I play the piece over and over again and start to erasing/adding notes as much as I can. want to make expressionist music or something similar to that.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

A: Yes, first my recorded full-length album, with the 12-14 track for piano solo.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

A: In December 2019.

Any plans to hit the road?

A: No, I think this old habit(performing in cafes and doing small gigs in city) is part of my life now. As long as i can do that it is good enough for me.

What else is happening next in Parjam Parsi’s world?

A: Working hard to releasing the album in the best way, focusing on developing our label and working with great friends/musician for upcoming projects.
